Every Saturday at 12:30 PM come join us at The Black Lotus' beautiful ceremony space in San Marcos la Laguna, Guatemala.

We have held hundreds of ceremonies, classes and workshops in this space over the years. Right now we are once again sharing cacao in a group setting, every Saturday at 12:30 PM.
You can enter The Black Lotus either directly from the San Marcos lakefront (beach side) through our white arch and black gate, or from the street entrance in the back (road side) through the big black door of the white building with the round window. If you are coming from the main public dock in San Marcos or from 'hippie highway', it's an easy 5 minute walk along the beach. If arriving by tuk-tuk or by foot from the paved road, go down the hill toward Silani dock. The Black Lotus is across the street from Keith's Cacao.

We first came to San Marcos 10 years ago as solo travelers searching for...something. Back then, and for many years, the thing to do in San Marcos was go sit on Keith ‘The Chocolate Shaman’s porch, drink cacao, and go deep into your sh*t. Keith ignited the cacao ceremony craze here at the lake and around the world. We were lucky enough to work with him for many years until he passed. Our own calling (and our fun) is to help others in a similar way.
If you were drawn to San Marcos in search of something, perhaps more love, joy, healing, connection, or spiritual experiences that make no sense to the mind, we would be honored to assist you on your journey, with the help of Keith’s Cacao--the most gentle yet powerful plant medicine on the planet. You can read more about our background, training, and why we built The Black Lotus here:
Clarity & Focus
Cacao increases blood flow to the brain, boosting productivity, sharpening thinking, and elevating our ability to write, code, ideate.
Processing Emotions
Cacao assists in confronting & processing fears, insecurities and emotional blocks that rob you of the life you really want.
Physical Health
Research shows that cacao is good for the heart, brain, skin, mood & much more. It's the most antioxidant-rich food on the planet.
Creative Flow
Artists, writers, musicians, and creators of all kinds drink cacao to access deeper levels of creative success with fewer blocks.
Deeper Connection
As a heart-opener, cacao makes it easier to connect with others and yourself. It's great for couples or anyone craving connection.
Spiritual Awakening
Cacao can help accelerate your awakening by dissolving the ego and accessing higher dimensions of consciousness.

We have tried many different brands of cacao from all over the world, but always return to the one that started the global ceremonial cacao movement. Most of the cacao companies around today were started by people who studied with Keith, sat on his porch drinking his cacao, and were inspired to make and sell their own.
Keith began working with cacao back in 2003. He couldn't consistently find good cacao for inner work, so he created his own. After years of research and sampling, he perfected the bean sourcing and hand-toasting techniques that preserved the natural properties of cacao as a powerful medicine plant. Keith's Cacao is consistently low in caffeine and high in theobromine. Many other cacaos that claim to be ceremonial-grade have too much caffeine and too little active compounds to support our inward journeys.

"Changed my life"
I found Herb's cacao ceremonies to be incredibly transformational. They literally changed my life in the best of ways.
- Katie S.

"Real, raw inner work"
Cacao ceremonies at The Black Lotus were a space where real, raw, deep inner work could occur. They helped me face fears and triggers that I otherwise would've avoided, and helped me to become my true self. So grateful.
- Tom B.

"A magical experience"
I have been to many beautiful cacao ceremonies, but Herb's are truly unique. I've found myself laughing and crying in many of his ceremonies, sometimes all at once. Herb and Alla facilitate and create a safe space to feel and process emotions.
- Laurel V.

About cacao and this event
Each Saturday gathering is Q100 per person if it's your first time attending, and Q50 for every time after that. (Q stands for Quetzales, the local currency of Guatemala). At this time we can only accept cash. The price includes a ceremonial serving of Keith's Cacao (42 grams or 1.5 ounces).
No reservation needed. You can simply show up on the day of the event. We recommend showing up at least 10 minutes early so you can choose your seat, use the toilet if needed, and begin grounding into the space.
Usually between 2 to 3 hours, but we don't set a specific ending time because we will continue to hold the space as long as people need it. You are welcome to leave early if you wish, but we ask that everyone arrives on time for the start at 12:30 PM so we can open the ceremony together as a group. At the end we also open the ceremony space for integration and relaxation, so you are welcome to enjoy the space if you feel called to.
Every week's gathering is a bit different, depending on the group energy, how many people show up, and what people most need that day. But in essence, we begin each ceremony by serving cacao (you are welcome to drink as much or as little as you like, or none at all). We set intentions and then see what sort of fun / trouble we can get into. There may be some guided meditation, storytelling, shamanic journeying, inner child work, somatic release, connecting to our higher self / consciousness, or something new and unexpected may arise.
Here in San Marcos we find the group size varies wildly from week to week, depending on the weather, what other events are happening that day, and the time of year in general. Generally somewhere between 10 and 30 people show up. Smaller groups can feel more intimate of course, but larger groups also provide benefits energetically. People tend to get the group size they most need on the day they choose to attend.
Simply bring an open mind and heart along with the rest of your magical self! We provide drinking water, so you may want to bring a water bottle. We also provide blankets, meditation cushions and benches to support your inward journey. To get the most out of this event, we recommend limiting your caffeine intake on Saturday morning, and not using other plant medicines nor alcohol before the event. For inner work with ceremonial cacao, a light to medium meal is best, 2-3 hours before. Cacao can be a little harder to process on an empty stomach, or feel more intense, especially if you consume a full ceremonial dose.
Cacao is considered psychoactive, not psychedelic. Generally it does not induce hallucinations, though visions and somatic experiences can occur. Cacao is considered the most gentle plant medicine, and unlike the psychedelic plants, cacao will not push you into your process until you are actually ready for it. You will experience as much or as little as you allow.

We are co-facilitating this unique, amazing retreat for the 3rd year in a row. From March 3 to 10, immerse yourself in the world of ceremonial cacao, from visiting the cacao forest where the beans grow on trees, to meeting the incredible team that makes Keith's Cacao, to sitting in ceremonies and workshops with other cacao lovers from around the world.
